Overview

This online course  will explore the workup and management of erectile dysfunction and its relationship to the pelvic floor. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. The overall prevalence of ED found in Canadian men aged 40-88 is nearly 50%, affecting approximately 3 million Canadian men over the age of 40. ED is most effectively managed through an interdisciplinary approach involving physicians, pelvic floor physiotherapists, and psychologists. While pelvic physiotherapy is essential for helping patients restore erectile function, it’s also important to address the medical aspects of ED management. This evidence-based presentation discusses the medical role in the assessment and treatment of ED using a biopsychosocial framework.

Join Dr. Yonah Krakowsky as he delves into the intricate physiology of an erection and erectile dysfunction. In this comprehensive exploration, he will examine the various physiological factors that can impact and impair erectile function, providing a thorough understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved. To effectively assess ED, a comprehensive medical evaluation is essential, starting with a detailed subjective history aimed at uncovering contributing factors. This assessment may also involve evaluating vascular function or conducting a physical examination. However, in healthcare systems with limited resources, such assessments may not always be feasible or necessary, and the approach may need to be adjusted accordingly.

The primary medical treatment for ED is sildenafil, widely recognized as Viagra. In addition to this, a holistic approach to managing ED includes adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, ensuring adequate sleep, and reducing stress. Dr. Krakowsky further explores a range of alternative medical treatments available for ED patients and emphasizes the crucial role of pelvic floor physiotherapy, which is essential for all individuals experiencing ED.

PHS was founded in 2010 out of the need to develop pelvic health resources in Ontario at a time when it was an under-serviced health concern. PHS provides continuing education courses, mentoring, and clinical resources for a variety of practitioners with the goal of equipping them to deliver evidence-based, biopsychosocial assessment and treatment of pelvic health problems in our province and abroad.

Our company also exists as a way to connect people experiencing pelvic health concerns to pelvic health physiotherapists in their area. PHS has ultimately blossomed into a community of curious people who are committed to providing hope and healing to those who suffer from pelvic health issues.
