Course Overview

We’ve all heard that pain education is not a stand-alone modality and that some patients do not fully reconceptualize pain after standard pain science education.

This online course will help you to embed pain education within assessment and treatment interactions and allow your patients to embody our current understanding of pain and recovery.

Embodying this knowledge means providing opportunities for patients to experience changes in their own body – changes in pain itself and in ease of movement might be exactly what your patient needs to move from partial reconceptualization of pain into the behavioural changes we know are possible thanks to bioplasticity and human resilience. Techniques, practical tips and scripts will be discussed, including how we might avoid inadvertently reinforcing unhelpful pain beliefs during our comprehensive assessment and treatment of the people with persisting pain and those transitioning from acute to chronic pain.

Course Objectives

In this online course with Neil Pearson, you will:

  • Gain options for those times when a patient does not believe your education, or partly reconceptualizes pain
  • Integrate your pain education with assessment and treatment to provide a consistent integrated patient experience
  • Learn how to embed pain education into PT interventions and therapeutic exercise
  • List key messages and key outcomes of pain education
  • Understand the specific intent of each component of a typical pain education session
  • Gain instructions in expert-guided and evidence-based pain self-care techniques to support pain education
  • List key misconceptions and embedded beliefs about pain, about people with persisting pain, and about pain care and recovery
  • Understand different approaches and outcomes of pain education discussed in research reports
  • Discuss obstacles to effective pain education
  • Describe how to effectively embed pain education with assessment procedures
  • Refine practical techniques and scripts for specific clinical challenges
