Overview

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and pain are known barriers to sport and exercise participation in female athletes and active women and affect their quality of life and work productivity. As practitioners, we have a role in supporting females with PFD and pelvic pain using non-internal approaches that are complementary to pelvic health physiotherapy, and conventional treatment. Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture (EA) are modalities that have proven benefits in supporting the rehabilitation of females with PFD and pelvic pain.

This continuing education course provides the knowledge and skills needed to use acupuncture/EA as an adjunct treatment for PFD, including pelvic pain, in female athletes and active women. This knowledge is transferable to males with PFD as well. The course begins by covering the terminology and prevalence of PFD and the current evidence for acupuncture. This is followed by a comprehensive review of the anatomy of the pelvic floor, with a focus on the neuroanatomy and functional anatomy. Application of this knowledge is facilitated through a case study and the creation of a treatment plan, with a bonus video demonstration.

To effectively apply the principles of neurofunctional electro-acupuncture (NFEA) in the treatment of females with PFD and/or pelvic pain, there must be an understanding of the dysfunction and the anatomy, including neuro-anatomy. This course is designed to facilitate this knowledge in practitioners who already have acupuncture training or use acupuncture/EA in their clinical practice. This course is also appropriate for practitioners who work with individuals who have PFD/pelvic pain and are interested in learning how acupuncture/EA can help in treatment, supporting a multi-disciplinary approach.
